The Modern Tally Alternative

Tally built the Indian accounting category — but it was built for 1990s desktops, single-user offices, and Windows-only deployments. Lander Books brings the same accounting rigour to the cloud, with multi-user collaboration, a client portal, work-item tracking, and automatic invoicing on top.

Tally is excellent at what it does — and what it doesn’t. For two decades it’s been the default bookkeeping tool for Indian firms, and the voucher-and-ledger model it pioneered is genuinely good. But “it works” is increasingly less than enough:

  • Your team is hybrid, but Tally is chained to a specific desktop
  • Your clients want to upload bills via WhatsApp, but Tally has no client portal
  • Your firm bills for time, but Tally has no work-item or time-tracking concept
  • Your associates need consistent workflow, but Tally has no configurable-workflow engine
  • Your backups rely on someone remembering to take them, and restoring from them is painful

Lander Books is built to be a complete Tally replacement for modern Indian CA firms and SMEs — every core Tally feature you depend on, plus the practice-management and collaboration layer you’re currently cobbling together from WhatsApp, Google Sheets, and Dropbox.

Everything Tally does — plus everything Tally can't

Complete feature parity on accounting, with a modern cloud layer on top.

Multi-hierarchy ledgers

Auto-created per-product ledgers, custom chart of accounts, and a full audit trail.

Cloud-native multi-user

Any browser, any device, anywhere — no Tally-on-the-server licenses, no remote-desktop workarounds.

Client portal + WhatsApp

Clients upload documents via portal, WhatsApp, Telegram, or Line. Zero email back-and-forth.

Work items & practice mgmt

Track every billable activity with owner, status, and automatic invoicing — the layer Tally doesn't have.

What Tally migration looks like in Lander Books

Migration is the question every Tally user asks first — and the answer is boring, which is the good kind of boring for a business-critical move:

  1. Export Tally data. We’ll walk you through exactly which XML / Excel exports to run from your current Tally instance.
  2. Import via Lander Books’ Tally importer. Ledgers, vouchers, masters, opening balances — everything comes across with its original voucher numbers and audit trail intact.
  3. Reconcile. A trial balance comparison ensures the Tally closing balance matches the Lander Books opening balance to the paisa.
  4. Go live in parallel for two weeks. Optional — some firms run both in parallel for a fortnight to build confidence before fully cutting over.
  5. Shut down Tally. Most firms do this 2–4 weeks after first import.

Most firms are fully migrated within a few days of kickoff, not weeks.

Reasons firms keep Tally — and how Lander Books addresses them

  • “We’ve been on Tally for 15 years.” Fair. Every ledger, voucher, and opening balance imports cleanly — continuity is preserved, not lost.
  • “Our CA accountants know Tally.” They’ll know Lander Books within a day — vouchers, ledgers, and reports use the same mental model.
  • “Our auditors expect Tally data files.” We export back to Tally-compatible XML if an external auditor needs it.
  • “What if I lose internet?” Lander Books caches last-known state for read access. Writes queue and sync when you’re back online. For firms with data-isolation needs we also offer single-instance deployment on dedicated infrastructure.

Tally to Lander Books — common questions

Yes. Ledgers, vouchers, masters, and opening balances import cleanly via the built-in Tally importer. Voucher numbers and audit trail metadata are preserved.

Most firms are fully migrated within a few days of kickoff. Larger firms with 10+ clients might take a week or two, including optional parallel-run period.

No — Lander Books has full feature parity on the accounting side (vouchers, ledgers, reports, GST, TDS). You gain cloud access, multi-user collaboration, client portal, work-item tracking, and automatic invoicing that Tally doesn’t have.

We export in Tally-compatible XML for external auditors who still work in Tally. Most auditors accept Lander Books exports (Excel / PDF / CSV) directly these days.

Licensing is per firm (not per user), which typically works out cheaper than Tally’s per-machine-per-year licenses once you have more than two or three users. Book a demo and we’ll put the specific numbers side by side.

Lander Books caches last-known state for read access when offline. Writes queue and sync when connectivity returns. For firms with strict offline or isolation needs we offer single-instance deployment on dedicated infrastructure.
